FOURTEEN budding Jamie Olivers from Crookhorn, Horndean and Oaklands Schools and South Downs College took part in the first round of the annual Waterlooville Rotary Club Young Chef 2008 competition held at Oaklands School.

The contestants had to create a healthy two-course meal for less than £10 in 90 minutes. The competition encourages young people to develop cookery and food presentation skills whilst at the same time demonstrating their organisational skills and their ability to cope in a demanding situation.

The three judges were all food experts in their own right. Anne Gaines is a Food Writer and Home Economist, Tessa Smith is the proprietor of Tessa Catering and partner in the Chilli Jam Company and David Barnard is the Proprietor and Head Chef at the renowned Barnard's Restaurant in Denmead.

Rotary President Mike Pemberton presented certificates to all contestants and prizes for first and second place and applauded the high standard of cooking .

The ultimate winner was 14 year old Harry Tutt of Oaklands School who won through with a menu of Parmesan Chicken with Proscuttio Ham on a bed of  braised cabbage with smoked bacon & peas, followed by rhubarb and pear crumble. Second place went to 16 year old Jessica Shelley of South Downs College.

Both contestants went through to the next round at Warblington School on 8th January.

UPDATE

Harry Tutt was joint winner of the second round and went forward to the next Regional round with a chance of competing in the National Finals. Unfortunately he didn't make the final cut but we were very proud to be sponsoring Harry in his efforts.
