The Southdowns Challenge event HQ will be the D Day Memorial Hall which is located in the quiet peaceful village of Southwick near Portsmouth and Waterlooville in Hampshire. The hall has limited parking, but an overflow car park can be used and can be found further along Priory Road. Please use this car park in the first instance.
It all started in 2006 when the club sponsored a cycling event centered on the South Downs. The event was the brainchild of club member John Ellwood, an extremely experienced and respected cyclist, who drew up the route, organised the entries and told the rest of us what to do on the day! The event was a great success and has been repeated every year since with similar results.

Local charities BASICS, the Jubilee Sailing Trust and small local charities will benefit by almost £3000 as a result of the Waterlooville Rotary Club's ‘Southdown Challenge'.
On a lovely late summer's day more than 200 riders donned their lycra, grabbed their bikes and headed out of Southwick Village for either an 80 or 50 mile test around the Hampshire countryside, criss-crossing the South Downs Way.
Fourteen people achieved gold standard at 50 miles and an amazing 48 people achieved gold standard at 80 miles, six of whom completed the 80 miles in less than four hours - a remarkable achievement.
There were a number of heart-warming stories to tell. 74 year old Joan Ellwood, wife of the event organiser John Ellwood, took on the fifty mile route to prove that even with two new hips you are never too old. But to Joan this was ‘child's play' compared with two recent tours - riding the length of Vietnam and around the island of Cuba!
Thirteen riders from local Denmead firm RIMOR had an added incentive to complete the journey - CEO Chris Riley promised to top-up the charity fund if they completed the journey, which they duly did. Chris was more than happy to pay up!
John Cairns, President of Waterlooville Rotary Club commented ‘This event just goes from strength to strength each year and is one of our most successful fundraising events. It is always an enjoyable event for riders and organisers alike and we want to make it even bigger next year'.
BASICS is a team of over 20 local volunteer doctors who act as first responders to road accidents and in some cases marine accidents.
