So much for the big picture, what is happening closer to home? The Rotary Club of Waterlooville holds a meeting weekly on a Tuesday at 7:30 at the Mead End Inn in Denmead. Each member is encouraged to attend on a regular basis so as to enjoy and participate in the well being of the club's activities.
Business at meetings is varied and often includes a talk or demonstration on a subject of general interest. The presentations are extremely useful in widening member's knowledge in what is happening around them as well as being an enjoyable way of passing part of the evening. Many of the talks are directly related to the charities being supported by Rotarians thus allowing members to be kept abreast with progress within the organisation. Rotarians are encouraged to invite non-Rotarian guests to club meetings and social events. The weekly meetings promote acquaintance and friendship and through this fellowship Rotarians find the inspiration to help with community projects.
Every Rotarian has the right to attend the meetings of any other Rotary Club anywhere in the world where he or she will be received with warmth and friendship. Many members exercise this right and without fail benefit from the experience.
What are we doing about it - 3?
The Rotary Club of Waterlooville collected nearly 590 Shoeboxes filled with Christmas goodies by children from schools in Catherington, Denmead, Cowplain and Purbrook for orphaned children in Tanzania and Montenegro. After sorting according to their suitability for various age groups, the shoeboxes were packed by Rotary Club members for dispatch and arrival in time for Christmas. Items included in the shoeboxes were small toys, books and crayons, clothing and toileteries and often personal messages and cards."

Mercy ships is a charitable organisation whose aim is to provide medical aid to the poorer areas of Africa. To ensure that any money raised reaches only those that need it the charity takes the medical facilities to the people in the form of a converted car ferry now named "African Mercy". The ship has been converted into a state of the art hospital ship with wards and operating theatres and, using the former car deck, mobile medical support vehicles that ventures out into the selected countryside administering to the population. The club nominated Mercy Ships as a nominated Charity in 2007 and fund raising included a member completing the London Marathon. Full details of this charity can be found on www.mercyships.org.uk
Fund Raising
In order to support our chosen charities we first need to raise some money. The club tries to organise at least 2 major fund raising events each year, at the moment they are;
a.The Cycling Sportive
b. Golf Day
Look under Projects for details of the events. (OTHER FUND RAISING??)In what has become something of a tradition, members of the club gather outside the ASDA store in Waterlooville just before Christmas and add a bit of seasonal cheer on the lead up to the big day. Despite freezing December temperatures, warmhearted shoppers donated £1282.65 towards Waterlooville Rotary Club's Christmas appeal. From this sum, £75 was presented to ASDA for their own charities and the remainder will support Waterlooville Rotary Club's work within the local community and also any emergency appeals which may arise during the coming year. Twenty Rotarian collectors worked in shifts over three days and were delighted with the generous response.
